Deuteronomy 34

THE DEATH OF MOSES

¹ Then Moses went up from the plains of Moab a to Mount Nebo, to the top of Pisgah, which is across from Jericho. And the LORD showed him all the land of Gilead as far as Dan, ² all Naphtali and the land of Ephraim and Manasseh, all the land of Judah as far as the 1 Western Sea, 2 ³ the South, and the plain of the Valley of Jericho, b the city of palm trees, as far as Zoar. ⁴ Then the LORD said to him, c "This is the land of which I swore to give Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, saying, 'I will give it to your descendants.' d I have caused you to see it with your eyes, but you shall not cross over there." ⁵ e So Moses the servant of the LORD died there in the land of Moab, according to the word of the LORD. ⁶ And He buried him in a valley in the land of Moab, opposite Beth Peor; but no one knows his grave to this day. ⁷ g Moses was one hundred and twenty years old when he died. h His 3 eyes were not dim nor his natural vigor 4 diminished. ⁸ And the children of Israel wept for Moses in the plains of Moab i thirty days. So the days of weeping and mourning for Moses ended.

OHOLIAB AND BEZALEL

¹ Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying: ² a "See, I have called by name Bezalel the b son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah. ³ "And I have c filled him with the Spirit of God, in wisdom, in understanding, in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship, ⁴ "to design artistic works, to work in gold, in silver, in bronze, ⁵ "in cutting jewels for setting, in carving wood, and to work in all manner of workmanship. ⁶ "And I, indeed I, have appointed with him d Aholiab the son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan; and I have put wisdom in the hearts of all the egifted artisans, that they may make all that I have commanded you: ⁷ f "the tabernacle of meeting, g the ark of the Testimony andh the mercy seat that is on it, and all the furniture of the tabernacle - ⁸ i "the table and its utensils, j the pure gold lampstand with all its utensils, the altar of incense, ⁹ k "the altar of burnt offering with all its utensils, and l the laver and its base -¹⁰ m "the 1 garments of ministry, the holy garments for Aaron the priest and the garments of his sons, to minister as priests, ¹¹ n"and the anointing oil and o sweet incense for the holy place. According to all that I have commanded you they shall do."

THE QUEEN OF SHEBA

¹ Now when the a queen of Sheba heard of the fame of Solomon concerning the name of the LORD, she came b to test him with hard questions. ² She came to Jerusalem with a very great 1retinue, with camels that bore spices, very much gold, and precious stones; and when she came to Solomon, she spoke with him about all that was in her heart. ³ So Solomon answered all her questions; there was nothing 2 so difficult for the king that he could not explain it to her. ⁴ And when the queen of Sheba had seen all the wisdom of Solomon, the house that he had built, ⁵ the food on his table, the seating of his servants, the service of his waiters and their apparel, his cupbearers, c and his entryway by which he went up to the house of the LORD, there was no more spirit in her.

PREPARATIONS FOR BUILDING THE TEMPLE

¹ Now a Hiram king of Tyre sent his servants to Solomon, because he heard that they had anointed him king in place of his father, bfor Hiram had always loved David. ² Then c Solomon sent to Hiram, saying: ³ d You know how my father David could not build a house for the name of the LORD his God e because of the wars which were fought against him on every side, until the LORD put1 his foes under the soles of his feet. ⁴ But now the LORD my God has given me f rest 2 on every side; there is neither adversary nor3 evil occurrence. ⁵ g And behold, 4 I propose to build a house for the name of the LORD my God, h as the LORD spoke to my father David, saying, "Your son, whom I will set on your throne in your place, he shall build the house for My name." ⁶ Now therefore, command that they cut down i cedars for me from Lebanon; and my servants will be with your servants, and I will pay you wages for your servants according to whatever you say. For you know there is none among us who has skill to cut timber like the Sidonians.

Wisdom of God

Wisdom of God – The wisdom of His Word
The wisdom of God has been evident since our beginning—in the Garden of Eden. Adam and Eve had free reign of the Garden and everything they would ever need was provided. But the tree in the middle of the Garden was the only thing forbidden. God warned Adam and Eve against eating from the tree of knowledge of good and evil. They disregarded God’s words. Had they listened to Him and not succumbed to temptation by the serpent, they would never have known evil. This was the fall, the failing, of mankind passed onto every generation.

We wonder about all the suffering in life, why bad things happen, and the evil in the world; but because of Adam’s and Eve’s sin of disobedience in the Garden, we are all subject to those things. You might view it as an inheritance left by our ancestors. There has not been a person since who has not sinned against God—it’s genetic.

Wisdom of God – His wisdom at work
The wisdom of God is demonstrated again in Genesis 6 with the story of Noah. Verses 5-8 say, “God saw how great man’s wickedness on the earth had become, and that every inclination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil all the time. The Lord was grieved that he had made man on the earth, and his heart was filled with pain. So the Lord said, ‘I will wipe mankind whom I have created, from the face of the earth—men and animals’...but Noah found favor in the eyes of God.” Only Noah and his family were saved when God sent the flood. It was by God’s wisdom the earth was replenished with a righteous generation.

Paul writes in Ephesians 3 about the mystery of the Gospel to the Gentiles. Speaking of God he says in verse 10, “His intent was that now, through the church, the manifold wisdom of God should be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms, according to his eternal purpose which he accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Wisdom of God – Having the Wisdom of God
Can mankind be given the wisdom of God? There are many verses revealing that God does indeed gift us with His wisdom. None is perhaps as well known for wisdom as King Solomon. “God gave Solomon wisdom and very great insight, and a breadth of understanding as measureless as the sand on the seashore” (1 Kings 4:29). Other examples are found in 1 Kings 5:12; 10:24; Exodus 31:3(Moses); Deuteronomy 34:9(Joshua) and Ephesians 1:17(Paul’s prayer in Ephesus).

After discussing life’s trials,James 1:5 says, “If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.”

Without wisdom, life can be thorny. Our human wisdom can lead us into more trouble, life can seem very unfair. If life contained perfect justice, every one of us would suffer eternally for every shortcoming in our imperfect lives. It is better than fair that a righteous Savior bridges the gap between imperfect man and a perfect God with infinite wisdom. Seeking the wisdom of God is the answer to each and every individual. If we can turn our heart to Him and allow His Word to guide us, we will live a life totally embraced with God’s love and wisdom.

1 Kings 4 SOLOMON'S OFFICIALS

¹ So King Solomon was king over all Israel. ² And these were his officials: Azariah the son of Zadok, the priest; ³ Elihoreph and Ahijah, the sons of Shisha, 1 scribes; a Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud, the recorder; ⁴ b Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, over the army; Zadok and c Abiathar, the priests; ⁵ Azariah the son of Nathan, over d the officers; Zabud the son of Nathan, e a priest and f the king's friend; ⁶ Ahishar, over the household; and gAdoniram the son of Abda, over the labor force.

Is My Life Worthy of the King?

Four Tests

Is my life worthy of God?

Every self-affirming tendency inside of me is quick to mute the question, but it unavoidably forces itself back to my attention as I read through the New Testament, especially in places like Ephesians 4:1; Philippians 1:27; Colossians 1:10; 1 Thessalonians 2:12; 4:1; 2 Thessalonians 1:5, 11; and Revelation 3:4.

“Walk worthy” would seem to make an appropriate slogan over the Christian life. So is my life worthy of the King? What does that mean? How do I know?

I’m not left to my distorted speculations, thanks to Colossians 1:9–14.

And so, from the day we heard, we have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him. (Colossians 1:9–10)

What follows next are four phrases that flesh it out — four tests for living out the will of our King.
