TYPES OF TRADITIONAL ART
Traditional Arts are arts that are part of the culture of a group of people with the knowledge of the arts being passed from the generation to the other. Different types of art are: Nok art, Igbo art, Ukwu act, Ife art, Benin art, etc.
i. NOK ART: This was said to be the earliest art that produced life sized terracotta discovered by Colonel J. Dent Young in 1928 which means for both religious and social purposes.
CHARACTERISTICS OF NOK ART
1. The works of Nok culture are mainly teraccota i.e. baked or fired clay
2. Animal figures are more presented than human figures
3. Artworks are highly sophisticated
4. human figures had strange open mouths
ii. IGBO UKWU ART: This came from the archeological finds discovered in the Eastern Part of Nigeria. It made of bronze, terracotta, ivory and bead, all dated back to around 800AD. Some of them make up of bowl pots, staff heads, bracelets, pendants and shells, bells and anklets.
CHARACTERISTICS
1. Works are made of terracotta, ivory, beads, and bronze
2. Objects of art were bowl pots, staff heads, anklets etc.
iii. IFE ART: This exhibited a sophisticated craftsmanship, so good that the works were thought to be beyond the capabilities of Africans. It was carried out by 1910 and 1912 by Leo Frobenius, A German.
CHARACTERISTICS
1. Ife art was naturalistic in style
2. Bronze works of Life art carry scarification, mostly on the face.

Esie stone sculptures, Benin art, Tsoede
