CCTV grabs give lead on ‘cops’ who robbed Delhi couple

NEW DELHI: A day after TOI reported how a couple was abducted and robbed of around Rs 1.6 lakh by two “cops” in Lutyens’ Delhi, police said they were close to getting a breakthrough. The suspects have been spotted on at least two CCTV cameras installed on the route the victims were forced to take, a source said.
The robbers had on Friday intercepted the couple’s car at Golf Links in New Delhi district, stopped at Sai Mandir on the way and, then, taken them to Mehar Chand Market in Lodhi Colony. The police have scanned the footage of at least a dozen cameras on this route, apart from one at an Andhra Bank ATM from where the accused were forced to withdraw money. An electronic route is being prepared and the grabs have been circulated to police units. Police are going to prepare portraits of the suspects.

Senior officers said at least 10 teams have been formed to crack the case and crime branch has been roped in. “We are probing both angles — the involvement of professional criminals masquerading as policemen as well as real policemen who may have indulged in this wrongdoing,” a top officer from Delhi Police told TOI.

Sources in New Delhi district confirmed that an informal inquiry was conducted in Lodhi Colony police station and special cell — which are located in the same compound — and adjoining stations in New Delhi and south district to make sure that none of their men were involved.
